React, JavaScript and accessible UI in WordPress and beyond.
About this learning path
Many WordPress sites still rely on jQuery for menus, filters and forms. Rewriting everything at once is risky; moving one feature at a time to React is not, as long as the rest of the site keeps working while you do it.
This path shows an incremental migration inside an existing WordPress theme or plugin, using the tools WordPress already ships: @wordpress/scripts for the build, @wordpress/element for React, and the REST API with nonces for data. Accessibility is part of every step, not an afterthought.
Who it’s for: Theme and plugin developers who know jQuery and want a safe route to React.
What you’ll learn
Setting up @wordpress/scripts and mounting React with createRoot inside a theme
Passing server data to scripts safely with wp_add_inline_script
Calling the REST API with nonces, and handling loading and error states
Keeping focus management and live regions accessible when the UI updates
How to build React components that work for keyboard and screen-reader users: labelled forms with useful errors, dialogs with the native dialog element, disclosure menus, focus management after updates, live regions and how to test it all.
The TypeScript you actually need in React and Next.js projects: typing props and children, state and refs, events, reusable components with generics, and turning untrusted API data into safe types with runtime validation.
How to replace jQuery widgets in a WordPress theme with React components one at a time: building with @wordpress/scripts, mounting with createRoot, passing data and nonces safely, and fetching from the REST API.
